The History and Mission of H.O.W

Haitian Orphans Wish (H.O.W) was founded in 2003 by a small group of dedicated friends and volunteers with the goal of helping orphaned and abandoned children in Haiti.

In order to achieve this goal H.O.W organizes fundraising events and uses the proceeds of these activities to provide assistance to many disadvantage children and youths in Haiti.

What started as a tiny seed quickly grew into a powerful tree that becomes taller and stronger every year. H.O.W first fundraising event was in the small auditorium of the Sacred Heart church located in Cambria Heights. Since then, H.O.W has grown to become one of the most successful Haitian non-profit organizations in the New York Tri-State Area, thanks to the inspiration, the vision and the dedication of H.O.W members.

Haitian orphans face a multitude of issues, the most pressing ones being hunger and lack of shelter. Over the years, however, H.O.W has realized that the lack of access to education remains a key obstacle to social and economic development in Haiti, and has decided to attempt to improve the children’s path to a better education. In the past few years, H.O.W has provided funding to one of the orphanages to rebuild their school and has assisted another charitable group in the construction of a canteen that feeds numerous school children four times a week. More recently, H.O.W has donated school uniforms and one thousand (1,000) book bags filled with school supplies to several orphanages and needy educational institutions. H.O.W. also started supporting a vocational Sewing school, located in Fontamara, and is committed to finance all the operating costs.

In the coming years, H.O.W intends to finance other vocational schools to support Haitian youth and to donate an additional 1,000 book bags to educational institutions.

H.O.W is a 501(c) (3) tax exempt non-profit organization with a dedicated staff, based in Uniondale NY. It is managed by a Board of Trustees comprised of highly supportive and dedicated volunteers. The bylaws by which H.O.W operates can be viewed here.

President’s Message

Greetings! On behalf of the members of the Haitian Orphans Wish Organization, I would like to welcome you to our web page!

Haitian Orphans Wish, preferably known as H.O.W, was established in September 2003 when a group of friends and relatives assembled to start helping one of the most neglected groups in the Haitian society – the orphaned children.

I am honored to be associated with such an enthusiastic and dedicated group of volunteers that take time out of their busy schedules to attend our monthly meetings, participate in every fundraising event with the desire to help our cause. We seek to increase our membership and encourage those who are concerned to get involved in H.O.W – there is a place for everyone in our organization.

Many doubt their ability to mitigate Haiti’s problems because they are so numerous. However, I strongly believe that if each one of us makes a small commitment to form or join an organization like HOW, we can make a major difference in these children’s lives, which need an invaluable amount of hope and joy.

Please come back and visit the website often; your comments, questions or support are always welcome!
